“ So of course I said no more that score , and we
went to sleep before long , He thought I was
asleep first , but I wasn’t , and lay there for hours trying to decide
whether that front pattern really did move together or separately “ (page 653)
In
charlotte Perkins Stetson story “The Yellow Wallpaper “the narrator of the
passage is giving the reader glimpse of how the narrators unstable state of
mind is, how mentally she isn’t okay. In the quotation , the narrator saids “
he thought I was asleep first , but I wasn’t , and lay there for hours trying
to decide whether that front pattern really did move together or separately “.
The narrator is losing sleep thinking obsessing over this wallpaper in her
secure ancestral halls she had for the summer. The narrator clearly thinks this
wallpaper as a living thing in her house. This shows she has some sort of
sickness and that she is clearly obsessing over a non-living thing. Meaning,
how the narrator has a huge imagination, to think of this wallpaper to be
actually moving when in reality wallpaper can’t move.
The “he” in the quotation is the
narrators husband named john, who clearly doesn’t fully know how mentally
unstable his wife is. It said “we went to sleep before long, he thought was
asleep first, but I wasn’t “. The relationship between the narrator and her husband
is also not stable. For her husband not knowing his wife isn’t truly asleep, yet
thinking about fictional things shows how he is clue less to the idea of his
wife not being okay. This shows how the husband john seems to not fully know
how truly his wife is sickly.
In previously paragraphs, the narrator saids “you
see he does not believe I am sick, and what can one do? “ This
shows her husband has no care to even take the time to figure out how mentally
sick his wife. As a husband when you truly love your wife, you care for every
inch of her, clearly john has no care for her. Not knowing how sick she is, he can’t
even help and yet supposedly he is a “physician “. It is just crazy to know
that john is supposedly a physician but he does not believe that his wife is sick,
and over time it can become worse and more damaging to their relationship. The
relationship between these two clearly has no meaning, no love to it.
Throughout the enter passage the narrators continues to becomes more and more obsessive
with the wall paper.
